Table Tennis

Table tennis was introduced in England as a modified version of lawn tennis, which had rapidly grown in popularity since the first Wimbledon Tournament in 1877. Originally seen as a makeshift parlour game for the wealthy class, the modern version of table tennis began to emerge around 1902 with games ending at 11 points, and the introduction of rubberised paddles and lighter celluloid balls first sourced in America. In the Caribbean, traction in the game seems to have first been seen in exclusive social clubs in Jamaica during the early 1900s, and by 1958, when the Caribbean Table Tennis Federation was formed, Guyana had achieved regional dominance in the sport - a trend that continued until the mid-1970s. Currently, nearly all regional countries have their national associations and participate in competitions sanctioned by the International Table Tennis Federation. Table tennis has been an Olympic sport since the Seoul Games in 1988.
